Jupiter Island
Community location:
25 miles north of Palm Beach and 10 miles south of Stuart
Community information:
Jupiter Island is part
of a chain of barrier islands that stretch from Key West
and reach as far north as New York. The island is 17 miles
long and 25 miles north of Palm Beach and 10 miles south
of Stuart. It was first recorded by Europeans as part of
land grant from the king of Spain in 1815. In the early
1900s much of the land was sold to a British land development
that subsequently went bankrupt in the 1920s. The company's
holdings were then acquired by a group of friends who enjoyed
staying at a small hotel on the island and had a vision
of conserving its natural beauty. Today, much of the island
is in the hands of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the
Audobon Society, and the Nature Conservancy. Well known
as an exclusive enclave for prominent families seeking privacy,
Jupiter Island also offers excellent private schools, superb
shopping and proximity to fine restaurants in Palm Beach
and Martin counties. Jonathan Dickson State Park and Hobe
Sound Wildlife Refuge are minutes away. Worth magazine has
ranked this quiet island town, population 601, for the second
year in a row "the wealthiest town in America" based on
real estate prices.

Tequesta
Community location: Just
north of the town of Jupiter
Community
information:
Tequesta's natural beauty
and serenity of the river to the deep blue ocean tempts people
in search of a pleasant freindly enviroment. This village
has a unique history around its founding. In 1955 a bride
tender was asked by charles Martyn to describe the area that
is now the Village of Tequesta. His reply was, "itjust a jungle".
Inspired by the remarks Martyn asked for a tour of the area.
As the two men traveled the Inlet and intracoastal by boat,
maartyn was immediately intrigued by the natural beauty and
potential of the area. He bought 86 acres on Jupiter Island
where he developed the Jupiter Inlet Colony. While excavating
the site, Martyn's crew unearthed an Indian mound filled with
artifacts. Martyn's interest in indian history led him to
research the mound's contents. later speculation was that
the mound belongs to an encampment of Tequesta indians encroaching
on the native jega Indians. martyn was convinced of this and
named an area he was developing west of the Intracoastal after
the Tequesta tribe. That development now know as the tequesta
country Club, was late incorporated as the village of tequesta.
Tequesta started as one man's vision and now has become a
thriving village with miles of luxury waterfront property
in a pristine enviroment. A mix of quiet single family home
neighborhoods and secure condominium complexes attract families,
working professionals and retirees to the Village. There are
plenty of shops, stores and serrvice businesses located in
tequesta along with churches of various faiths. New residents
and visitors are always greeted with a strong sense of community
and a genuine hometown freindliness.
